FAQ

When did the project take off?

This 5-year project started on January 1, 2017.

Who is funding Ocean artUp?

Ocean artUp is supported by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council. Total funding amounts to 2.5 Mio. €.

Where will the actual Ocean artUp research take place?

The project's host institution is the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. The field component of the research will take place in the subtropical North Atlantic off the Canary and Cape Verde Islands. See the map on the contact page.

Are there other possible benefits of artificial upwelling?

Aside from raising fish production artificial upwelling has been suggested as a means to combat global warming by

  1. increasing oceanic CO2 sequestration,
  2. stimulating the production of the climate-cooling gas dimethylsulphide and
  3. augmenting heat uptake by the ocean.

Although it is not the primary focus of the project, Ocean artUp will collect data and perform model simulations to investigate the potential benefits of artificial upwelling in mitigating climate change.

Are there any negative side effects of artificial upwelling?

This is precisely what Ocean artUp aims to explore. Possible side effects include the stimulation of harmful algal blooms, the production of greenhouse gases and the consumption of oxygen in deeper layers by sinking organic matter.
